Why Diverse AI Teams Are Key to Tackling Bias—And Why It Matters
By James Francis

“AI systems are only as smart as the people who make them, and if everyone’s thinking the same way, well, we might end up with an AI that thinks bias is the norm.” — James E. Francis, CEO
Introduction
So, here’s the thing—there’s been some serious pushback from the government on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts, and it’s making me think: How does this affect AI? Like, when it comes to creating artificial intelligence, does the team behind it need to look as diverse as the people it’s trying to serve? The answer, in my opinion, is a big yes.
Imagine this: You’ve got a group of people from all walks of life, each with their own unique experiences and perspectives. If something feels off or biased in the design of an AI system, someone’s going to notice it. But if everyone on the team thinks the same way? Well, that’s a recipe for missing the big issues. A diverse team helps make sure the AI doesn’t end up biased, unfair, or worse—completely out of touch with reality.
The current federal pushback could mean that AI teams get less diversity, which doesn’t exactly scream “fairness,” right? The truth is, more diversity could make AI systems smarter and more fair. It’s not just about checking boxes; it’s about making sure we build technology that actually works for everyone. If we want AI that’s fair and unbiased, we need to make sure those who create it come from all sorts of backgrounds. Simple as that.
